Organic India: Brief About Organic India Pvt. Ltd.

ORGANIC INDIA’s Spices are Pure, Potent, and always Tested for Salmonella :-

ORGANIC INDIA
Today the New York Times released an article stating that spices from India are a potential source of Salmonella. This is in fact, one of the reasons why there is an ORGANIC INDIA!

In the early 1990’s, high quality, organic, pathogen-free herbs were a rarity in India. ORGANIC INDIA was founded to resolve this problem, and to provide marginal farmers with sustainable, healthy, organic farming practices. Almost two decades later, much has changed but it is still vital to research the source of the herbs you take.

ORGANIC INDIA’s herbs and spices are pure, potent and constantly tested for any type of bacterial or fungal infection/contamination including Salmonella, and often, as the herbs and spices come into America, they get tested again by government agencies.

Our herbs are grown organically with biodynamic farming techniques, harvested by hand and locally processed within 24 hours. At the factory, they are dehydrated in a dry, sterile environment to a low moisture content of 10%.This specific limit of moisture prevents phytochemical degradation and mold or bacterial contamination. We take every precaution to ensure ORGANIC INDIA products are free from pathogens, bacteria, viruses, harmful chemical pesticides, artificial hormones, heavy metals, toxic contaminants, radiation and genetic modification, to provide pure potent and effective True Wellness herbs to benefit our customers worldwide.

We are amongst the few herbal companies in India to receive HACCP, GMP, ISO 9001-2008, Kosher and Halal Certifications. We have organic certifications from Control Union and SGS as per USDA, EU and NPOP Organic Standards. Please visit this page to learn more about what each of these certifications mean for safeguarding quality assurance.
CEO MR. KRISHAN GUPTA & FARMERS

India’s spiritual attraction is something the youth of the world come to taste. Some like Steve Jobs go home and build Apple and become one of the world’s richest people. Others like William Bissell of Fabindia have made India their home to continue nurturing time-tested ecofriendly fabrics. There are many others like Yoav Lev, an erstwhile Israeli, and his US-born wife Holly Bronfman who were born millionaires and have found peace in their work in India. They started ORGANIC INDIA, which has seeded almost 20,000 hectares of marginal and poor lands with organic farming techniques to grow traditional Indian medical herbs like tulsi (basil). Yoav now calls himself Bharat Mitra while Holly is called Bhavani, names given to them by their spiritual guru Poonja, who they found on the bank of Gomti in Kukrail near Lucknow in the 1980s.
Fifty-year-old Rewa Sankar Paliwal from Punatagaon in the Bundelkhand region of Uttar Pradesh began growing tulsi for ORGANIC INDIA on five hectares of dry land which was unsuitable for normal agricultural products. “Long back when ORGANIC INDIA approached me to grow tulsi, we were skeptical. With their technical inputs and buyback offer I set up some plots for their organic food grain and tulsi. Today I get `75 a kg for my tulsi leaf and an annual income of about `3.5 lakh. It will pay to send my son to become an engineer,” says Paliwal. There are many like him whose lives have changed once they started farming for the company.

There are no reliable estimates at the size of the Indian organic food and farming market. Numbers like `8,000 crore and an annual growth of about 15 per cent are bandied about but the terms organic and Ayurveda are often dubiously applied to many categories and products. “The world is seriously at risk with the use of chemical fertilisers and pesticide in farming. ORGANIC INDIA evolved as a solution to what we saw as devastation in India in agriculture. We are promoting an organic revolution in India,” says Bhavani who lives in the US.
ORGANIC INDIA managing director Krishan Guptaa, who is mostly seen working under the neem tree at the company’s research farm rather than his air-conditioned office, says it has taken 10 years of consistent hand-holding to build up the confidence of about 20,000 farmers in Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. “Our motto is to promote organic products through sustainable models and educate consumers about the true wellness of organic products. We are preserving mother earth through organic farming. Our products are sold through 15,000 franchisee retail stores like Fabindia, Big Bazaar, Spencer’s Reliance fresh, Metro Cash & Carry and also through premium outlets, kirana stores and pharmacies across India. In addition, sales are driven through online channels too,” says Guptaa. The company also has an exclusive outlet at Lucknow airport. It is now exploring the option of opening more airport stores. Varanasi and Patna are among the shortlisted locations.
Guptaa says ORGANIC INDIA is the country’s largest organic food and health product company but the market is filled with small, localised and often dubious set-ups. It processes organically produced tulsi, fruits and vegetables, spices, herbs and other produce to make a whole host of herbal supplements, medicines, spices, edible oils and other food products. All its products meet the tightest testing restrictions of at least 30 countries to which it exports, including the US, Australia, Israel, the UK, Germany and the rest of the EU. These include certifications from gmp, iso-9001, Kosher certifications and sgs as per usda, eu and npop organic standards. “Our products adhere to ethical standards which leads to their acceptance not only in India but also worldwide. Our processing methods are designed innovatively and we use advanced dehydration technologies to ensure best possible retention of potency and nutritional values,” says Dr. Amit Kumar, group product manager. “We introduce at least five or six products in a year.” The company has 4.5 hectares of model plots and a testing and research centre near Lucknow, where it occasionally organises training for farmers. “At present about 55 per cent of our annual revenue of `100 crore is from exports. The company is growing at 30 per cent,” says Guptaa. Tulsi tea is the company’s flagship product – available in 18 flavours, it contributes almost 20 per cent of the annual revenue.
Well placed for entrance
The company has four modern processing facilities in Lucknow, Bundelkhand, Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh and Chittoor in Andhra Pradesh. The Chitoor facility was set up recently at a cost of `40 crore and processes dehydrated fruits and vegetables, especially mangoes, with an annual capacity of over 9,000 tonnes. “The belt is famous for Totapuri mangoes. We have tied up with the mango growers for the supply,” says Guptaa. ORGANIC INDIA employs over 300 people including agriculturists and doctors. “We have a single platform for workers and managers on the shop floor, where everybody is given a free hand to experiment for product innovation. Performers are rewarded to boost their morale. Since the company is working for a social cause, our team members regularly visit farmers to offer technical and social support. Payments made to farmers for their produce are through the bank to maintain transparency,” says hr manager Smita Singh. Fabindia too, has successfully used this model of intrapreneurship in this sector, where the small farmer also becomes a partner and stakeholder in the process.
It is little wonder then, that recently, the Fabindia managing director William Bissell found a spiritual and commercial fit in acquiring 40 per cent of ORGANIC INDIA, set up in 1997. Fabindia runs a chain of 170 stores in 70 cities of the country for traditional Indian ethnic fabrics and handicrafts. “Both are focused on sustainable rural development. Fabindia will have access to ORGANIC INDIA’s dealers in many countries,” says Bissell. Fabindia will merge its own organic division into it and will also infuse `15 crore into ORGANIC INDIA as part of the deal. “We always had a strategic alliance with Fabindia. The deal is essentially to formalise that bonding,” says Guptaa.
ORGANIC INDIA is looking at multiplying its turnover fivefold to `500 crore by 2015, Guptaa claims. He is now setting up a grocery brand called ‘Organic Healthy Food Pack’ which will include the usual cereal, pulses, spices, organic ghee and teas used in Indian households. A new processing and packaging plant is being set up at Rath in UP at an investment of `8 crore.
Indian farmers have been discovering the downside of using excessive chemical fertilisers and pesticide over the last few years after the long honeymoon of the Green Revolution. Fertilisers have been affecting overall soil fertility and along with the leaching caused by the excessive use of ground water in intensive cultivation, pesticide has entered the food chain to the detriment of Indians. This push for food security was needed in these areas in the 1950s and 60s but has now run its course. India can now diversify its food production to include traditional foods based on the use of organic manure, water usage and growth techniques.
ORGANIC INDIA is well placed to enter this area of rural development because it has built up a good reputation with farmers; meanwhile, it has also invested and created its own urban markets. It will take some years before other competitors can create national brands.

TULSI The Wonder Drug

The Times of India - Mar 3, 2005
Since time immemorial, Tulsi is not only renowned but also praised for its health promoting and disease preventing properties. Tulsi, the 'sacred basil' (Ocimum Sanctum), has captivated the imagination of man from before the times of Rigveda for its good health and environment.

Tulsi is the plant that has made important contributions to the field of science from ancient times, and also to modern research due to its large number of medicinal properties. Tulsi is one herb that possesses anti-stress, anti-bacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiprotozoal, antioxidant and anticarcinogenic properties.

As sacred as Rama and Shyama, the third type of Tulsi- 'Van Tulsi' (botanically know as Ocimum Gratissimum)- is termed as the 'very grateful basil.' Though the knowledge of this type of Tulsi variety is constrained, it can be used in the same manner as Rama and Shyama. The Himalayas is the place where the Van Tulsi is mainly found but they are found in abundance in North India.

Though with time, a number of herbal medicines have developed, the role of Tulsi cannot be ignored since it has played an important role in maintaining its doctrine and value in every household. Chemically, Tulsi contains alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins glycosides, phenols, spooning, tannins and terrene.

Consumption of Tulsi in its raw form is most effective as it provides us with its entire constitution instead of providing selective ingredients. The Padampuranas and Tulsi Kavachan describe Tulsi as a protector of life accompanying the human being form birth till death.

Even in faults that according to Ayurveda have vatta, pitta and kapha,( literally meaning 'wind, bile and phlegm'), Tulsi plays a very important role, as Ayurveda looks at disease with a holistic view- point and disturbance of normal physiological functions of the body.

Tulsi contains multiple bioactive substances as well as minerals and vitamins, normalizing the disturbed physiological functions of the body by harmonizing the different imbalance that is confirmed with the an dent Ayurvedic concepts of Tridoshas.

Tulsi possesses anti- stress or adaptogenic properties having a staminator effect. The extract of Tulsi leaf helps in inhibiting the enzyme of filarial worm, and is also anti-tubercular, anti-fungal, anti-viral function as it possess the hypocholoestromic activity.

The most dreaded disease- AIDS- can also be regulated with Tulsi's anti-AIDS properties. Tulsi is useful against AIDS and it markedly reduces cell-mediated immunity. Tulsi also affects the central nervous system by prolonging the time of lost reflex.

In addition to this, ancient texts like Susruta Samhita, Padampurana and Garudpurana, after centuries of observation in humans, describe Tulsi as a 'child giver' and great spermatogenic agent. They report Tulsi as a fertility improver and enhance the chances of woman bearing progeny.

Tulsi is rightly termed as a 'wonder drug' and if one wants to learn more about it, one may talk to Dr Narendra Singh of International Institute of Herbal Medicine who has done a lot of work on this 'sacred basil'.

LIV KID for Liver Kidney Ailments

The Times of India - April 28, 2004
When Gaurav, an engineering student, was diagnosed with complete renal failure and no definite cure, he thought it was the end of his life and his otherwise illustrious career. Similar was the fate of Vijay Kumar, who had to undergo dialysis three times a month, involving treatment of costly allopathic drugs, whereas 53-year old Krishna Swami was counting his days following the failure of his kidneys.

These patients, however, did not know that there was a cure to their nephrological problems in well-tested Ayurvedic medicine. The Liv-Kid formula, developed by the Lucknow based International Institute for Herbal Medicine (IIHM), has a combination of three herbs which have a proven efficacy in cases of kidney failure, removal of kidney stones, jaundice, all forms of hepatitis including the dreaded Hepatitis B and cirrhosis of liver.

"At present, we have over 250 patients including Gaurav, Vijay Kumar and Swamy, with different problems of liver and kidney and they responded well to Liv- Kid capsules", claimed Dr Narendra Singh, director of the institute. Dr Singh is leaving for USA next week to participate in the World Congress on Ayurveda where he will present the success story of his various herbal formulations already making waves in this part of the country.

"This 3-in-1 Liv-Kid formula," Dr Singh said, "is a mixture of three well known herbs: Phyllanthus neruri( Bhumi Amalaki); Picrorrhiza kurroa (Katuki) and Boerrhaavia diffusa (Punarnava) which takes care of even complete renal failure."

Lashing out at what he described as unethical practices being adopted in Ayurveda, Dr Singh said his formula does not contain multiple herbs with an unconfirmed base, but clinically useful doses of each herb, with predictable results.

In case of liver diseases, these regulate and normalise liver functioning by providing biochemically supportive systems and regenerative push-ups to natural liver enzymes. The process of regeneration, and enzyme regulation through this is slow, but permanent, and without any side or ill-effects.

"Bhumi amalaki, Katuki and Punarnava are well known for their hepato-protective effects both, in combination and separately. The clinical studies on animals and also on human volunteers at the IIHM have established their efficacy scientifically", Dr Singh pointed out.

Demand for Organic Food : World Wide

Demand for Organic Food :
Organic agriculture, a worldwide growth industry, can be a profitable, sustainable business for agricultural producers interested in going through the certification process necessary to enter this market. Organics have continued to expand during the last few years, and industry experts are forecasting steady growth of 9 to 15 percent or higher.
Organic foods are those made from agricultural products grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilisers. It was from Papaji that Lev learnt the healing power of tulsi (basil plant). By 1997, he had begun cultivating three types of tulsi organically in Azamgarh in eastern Uttar Pradesh. In 2006 he launched Organic India with tulsi tea as its flagship product. Today, the company makes 18 different flavours of tulsi tea and 33 different herbal formulations or supplements, which are said to have medicinal value. He is gearing up to launch a complete range of organic food items, including rice and pulses. "We are in the final stages of a very promising joint venture to launch a comprehensive range of products both for the Indian market and for exports," says Lev. He prefers not to reveal the name of the well known Indian company he is negotiating with.
"It gave me a chance to interact closely with farmers and see the havoc that indiscriminate use of pesticides can create," he says. This spurred him to consider organic farming, even though he was aware agribusinesses rarely succeed in India, because of low margins and excessive government control. Today, his company, Sresta Natural Bioproducts, sells a range of 200 organic products in India and overseas from rice, pulses, sugar, and juices to breakfast cereals and jams. "Five years ago, 75 per cent of our revenue came from exports and the balance from the domestic market. Now both markets have equal share," he says.
Indeed, the demand for organic foods in India has seen a sharp growth in recent years. While earlier, organic food producers primarily aimed at exports to Europe and the United States, there is now a gradual shift. "The demand for organic foods has been growing and today we stock a range of around 38 different organic foods in 40 stores as against just about half a dozen stores three years ago," says S. Jagdish Krishnan, Chief Operating Officer of the retail and bakery divisions of Heritage Foods, an organic food company with a big presence in Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad.
Most of the big retail chains now stock organic products, including Godrej Nature's Basket, Hyper City, Food Bazaar, More, Nilgiris, Spencers and Tesco - Starbazar. While no of-ficial figures are available, industry estimates put the organic food market within India at close to Rs 100 crore, having grown five-fold in the last six years.

At the heart of ORGANIC INDIA is our commitment to be a living embodiment of love and consciousness in action. We work with thousands of small family farmers in India to cultivate tens of thousands of acres of sustainable organic farmland. • Place quinoa and water in a saucepan, and add salt to taste.
• Bring to a boil, reduce heat to simmer, cover, and cook until all of the water is absorbed (12-15 mins).
• Unlike rice, you can stir quinoa a few times to prevent sticking.
• The quinoa is done when it turns from white to transparent, and the germ has spiraled out of the grain.
